Domestic Violence Counselor

Site/Program: ROADS
Location: Brooklyn, NY

What Youíll Do

As a Domestic Violence Counselor, youíll help families, including children over age 6, by providing short-term counseling that enables them to become more economically self-reliant, maintain permanent housing, build job skills, and access community resources independently.  Youíll develop a comprehensive case narrative outlining the domestic violence history for each family; establish a service plan based on the needs you assess; facilitate linkages to social service programs; and explore options for safety, legal, financial, employment, housing, medical care, etc.  Additionally, youíll help your clients develop their own problem-solving skills and assess their own resources and support systems.

Youíre a great fit for this role if you:

  • Have experience counseling with domestic violence survivors.

  • Are able to help to your clients with housing, job placement, and employment.

  • Are knowledgeable about substance abuse, sexual abuse, and AIDS/HIV related theories and practice.

  • Are culturally sensitive, motivated, and energetic.

  • Have a Bachelorís Degree in Social Work, or a related field.

  • Are bilingual (Spanish/English), since many of our clients are native Spanish speakers.
