Housing Court Liaison

Site/Program: Project Anchor
Location: Ronkonkoma, NY

What Youíll Do

If you want to help people at risk of losing their homes, the you could be a great Housing Court Liaison with HELP USA Project Anchor in Suffolk County. Youíll help people who are facing eviction navigate the landlord-tenant court process and provide program representation during court appearances. Additionally, youíll communicate on behalf of Project Anchor and your clients regarding the programís commitment to assistance and payments to avoid client evictions. Youíll also help with client eligibility assessments, intakes and obtaining client documents, client follow-up, and program outreach.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Accompanying clients to Suffolk County Landlord-Tenant Court to provide advocacy and program representation Ė speaking on behalf of Project Anchor regarding program intentions for clients and tendering rental assistant payments in court for final case resolution.

  • Engaging in outreach to establish and reinforce Project Anchorís presence in the community; foster positive relationships with Suffolk County Landlord-Tenant Court agencies including Suffolk County DSS, attorneys, and landlords; and increase program enrollment.

  • Evaluating potential clients for program eligibility and assisting with program intakes as needed.

  • Maintaining complete, accurate, and timely documentation for all program activities and entering required information into AWARDS case management system.

Youíre a great fit for this role if you:

  • Have experience providing client advocacy and mediation as well as strong verbal, writing, and negotiation skills.

  • Have strong organizational and documentation skills, with the ability to pay keen attention to detail, manage multiple tasks in a time-sensitive manner, and work in a fast-paced and demanding environment.

  • Are able to take initiative and be dependable and resourceful.

  • Are available to provide some evening and weekend coverage as needed.

  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent, and a bachelorís degree in social work or a related field would be even better.

It would be helpful (but not required) if you:

  • Are knowledgeable about Suffolk County Landlord-Tenant Court procedures and Suffolk County housing laws.

  • Have experience in case management and assessment.

  • Are bi-lingual/multi-lingual (English/Spanish/Creole), since many of our clients are not native English speakers.

  • Have a valid US driverís license.
