Outreach Specialist

Position Overview

As part of New York Cityís plan to end homelessness, the Department of Homeless Services established Homebase Homeless Prevention Community Resource Centers throughout New York City. Homebase programs are designed to assist families and individuals who are homeless or at imminent risk for becoming homeless to develop a plan for long-term housing stability. Homebase helps clients navigate the complicated eviction process, offers financial and money management counseling, helps clients obtain public benefits, provides short-term financial assistance, and helps with relocation if necessary.

As Outreach Specialist with Homebase, youíll assist families who are at-risk of homelessness or who are already homeless with services to ensure housing stability in permanent housing.† Youíll coordinate services and activities to find and engage those most in need of assistance and those who can benefit the most from Homebase services.†† And youíll also conduct outreach, pre-screenings, household assessments, community presentations, and direct services to support the householdís housing stability.†

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Maintaining constant contact with community partners to engage clients who are at risk of becoming homeless in order to connect them to resources to ensure housing stability.

  • Developing effective, trusting relationships with identified clients with a focus on facilitating housing placement, stability, and independence.

  • Attending community meetings and events to organize and conduct local informational events in order to provide information about Homebase resources to organizations and community members.

  • Conducting pre-screening and assessments of clients.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; Associates Degree preferred.

  • Experience working with challenges faced by those that are at risk of homelessness.

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) fluency is required, as many of our clients are native Spanish speakers.

  • Prior experience in outreach, case management, assessment, counseling and crisis intervention preferred.

  • Knowledge of CARES a plus

  • Computer literacy, particularly with Microsoft Office applications.

  • Knowledge and understanding of team concepts preferred.

  • Valid US Driverís License preferred.
